Steve Ashley, geboren am 9. März 1946 in London, galt Mitte der 70er Jahre als eine der großen Hoffnungen der englischen Folk-Rock-Szene. Er war Gründungsmitglied der Albion Country Band und kam 1975 mit dem Album Stroll On, durch welches ihn die Kritiker auf eine Stufe mit Richard Thompson stellten, groß heraus. Das Folk Review Magazine wählte es zum Contemporary Folk Album of the Year. Sein Song Fire And Wine avancierte bald zur Hymne der Folk-Clubs. Austin John Marshall schreibt im Plattentext: „`Fire And Wine’ has now become a pagan anthem to all places where musicians and audiences get together to make their own warmth in the depth of winter, and Steve has moved to other places and seasons.“ In seiner Band Ragged Robin versammelte er auch die Crème de la Crème der englischen Folk-Rock-Szene: Dave Mattacks, Ashley Hutchings, Barry Dransfield (siehe The Dransfields), Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Danny Thompson, Sue Draheim und Royston Wood (The Young Tradition). Die prestigeträchtige US-Plattenfirma Motown verpflichtete ihn für weitere Alben, doch es kam nicht dazund Ashley spielte bis 1983 noch drei Alben ein, darunter die Anti-Atomkraft-Platte Demo Tapes, doch seine Popularität war bereits im Sinken begriffen. Mitverantwortlich dafür war zweifellos seine zunehmende Politisierung und Verehrung für Altmeister E. MacColl: „Places I’d done many times suddenly didn’t want to book me because I was doing more political things and they didn’t want to know about that. I’m not saying they were right wing .. .they were just apolitical.“ Ashley zog sich als Graphiker in die poltische Basisarbeit zurück. 1991 gelang ihm mit Mysterious Ways (unterstützt von Geiger Chris Leslie, Decameron-Veteranen Dik Cadbury u.Al Fenn und einer fulminanten Brass-Section) ein spektakuläres Comeback.
